Tunstall Embarks on 30th Season!

The Bank Holiday Weekend saw the start of the 2024 British Supersport Cup and for reigning champion Tom Tunstall it was also the start of his 30th season racing!

Oulton Park in Cheshire once again staged its now traditional Mayday Bank Holiday round of the British Superbike Championships as they returned to UK shores after the opening rounds in Spain.

Returning to the Supersport Cup class as reigning champion Tom Tunstall was once again mounted on the Ducati V2. With backing and branded support from specialist insurers - SRG – Specialist Risk Group. The same loyal team of insurance experts who have supported the team since 2008 under a new name!

With limited preseason testing and with upgraded parts Tunstall and his SRG team were somewhat on the back foot heading into round one.

Nearly 60 riders had signed up for the Supersport class meaning the riders were split into two groups for practice and qualifying with only the top 40 making it to the main races.

Progress with set-up in every session helped Tunstall secure 5th in the Cup Class.

Sundays 12 lap sprint race was frenetic with collisions and contact! Tunstall crossed the finish line 4th in the cup class a few seconds back from the podium placings but with a good direction for improvements.

More changes to the rear shock setting for both warm up and going into Monday’s feature race brought a well-founded optimism.

Tunstall improved his pace throughout the 16 lap encounter posting his fastest lap of the weekend, his fastest ever on a Ducati, on the penultimate lap.

Taking two positions on the final lap he took 3rd place in the cup and 23rd overall into the final corner for his first podium of the year.

He explained:
“It’s been a decent first weekend. The new parts are definitely a step in the right direction but just need dialling in. I’m feeling a bit green on the bike which means my confidence and feedback had some room for improvement.

With the changes in class structure at BSB we’ve got a stronger, younger grid this year which is great for the class and racing. We’ve kept our focus throughout the weekend and made good progress in every session. Right up to the last lap of the last race!

It’s been so good to get racing again and I’m looking forward to more progress and battles at Donington Park next time out. After so many seasons racing my passion for this sport and the challenge of racing is stronger than ever.

I’m grateful I’ve got the chance to do this for the enjoyment and love of the sport for another season.”

The next round of the series is at Donington Park in just over a week’s time on the 17-19th May weekend
