Difficult Donington For Tunstall

The latest round of the British Superbike championships saw Supersport Cup racer Tom Tunstall come away with two forth place finishes after a challenging weekend at Donington Park.

The Donington Park GP track hosted its first of two BSB events over the weekend. The Supersport Class was once again over subscribed with 57 riders split across two groups for practice and qualifying.

SRG – Specialist Risk Group racer Tunstall was placed 4th of the cup riders on the grid but yet to to get a good feeling and balance with his Ducati V2.

As the team warmed the bike up for Saturday’s sprint race the bike was not running cleanly and in a rush to resolve the issue found a split throttle body rubber.

Without time to replace a temporary duct tape fix was attempted but as Tunstall took to the grid it was with the bike still running rough!…

Relieved to finish the race he brought the bike home 4th in the Cup class.

Overnight replacement of both inlet rubbers was a significant undertaking. Requiring the removal of the bike frame which was completed just in time for Sunday morning’s warm-up session. A sensor failure was also found going into the race day.

Sunday’s race saw Tunstall launch off the line well and avoiding a large crash held a good position as the packed grid filed down Craner Curves. Unfortunately riders caught up in the crash required treatment bringing out the red flags.

On a shortened restart Tunstall’s get away wasn’t so good, losing places and held up after scrapping with slower riders

By lap 5 he was back to 4th. Running a comparable pace to third but unable to close the gap by the flag.

The results mean Tunstall currently holds third in the Cup championship only 10 points back from leader Cameron Hall

A somewhat disappointed Tunstall summed up his weekend:

“I was certainly looking for more coming into this weekend. Donington has been a good track for me but I have to remind myself that technical issues are all part of racing.

It was challenging but I’m grateful we’ve been so fortunate with the V2 until now.”

“The Supersport class is tough this season and the issues put us on the back foot, likewise I’ve not been at the top of my game this weekend.

The results and championship positions are a little flattering all things considered. We have a bit of a break before out next round so we’ll regroup and bounce back stronger”

Having not selected Knockhill as a “chosen round” the teams next event is Snetterton BSB over the weekend of 5th-7th of July
