Donington WSBK Support Races

After an 8-week lay off the Ducati Trioptions series roared back into action as part of the World Superbike Championship at Donington Park.

Tom Tunstall aboard his MotorycleRaceParts/TYSERS Ducati posted the fastest times in free practice and qualifying taking pole position in the first of the two races over the weekend.

In what turned into the race of the year so far, Tunstall battled with series leader David Shoubridge, and series debutant South African Blaze Baker from start to finish.

The trio swapped places every lap with each taking their turn to lead.
Shoubridge crashed out of 2nd at the start of the last lap which gave Baker space to take his first win, with Tunstall taking a close second place.

Sunday’s race started in scorching conditions with the temperature in the mid-thirties and track temp well into the 40’s.

It was the same three riders taking to the front from the off. But Shoubridge crashed out of the lead on the opening lap leaving Tunstall and Baker to fight it out.

Having swapped the lead and holding a solid gap over the pursuers, Tunstall noticed his bike engine water temperature increasing to over 120°c with his dashboard flashing warning.

Forced to drop his pace by rolling off the throttle early and reducing revs it allowed Baker to pull away.

With two laps to go and his engine temperature lower he pushed again, setting the fastest lap of the race. Despite being on Baker’s rear wheel, didn’t have time to push past and take the win.

Following the multiple south African champion over the line in 2nd but taking a 20 point lead in the championship.

“The temperature issue was so frustrating…

That was the best opportunity we’ve had for a win so far and I was very comfortable at that pace.

Whilst it’s a shame we didn’t come away with a win we’ve been very strong all weekend. The bike is still in one piece and we’re leading the championship – I’d say that’s a decent weekend’s work!”
