Tunstall Concludes 2024 with Seasons Best

SRG (Specialist Risk Group) Racer Tom Tunstall concluded his shortened race season with his best results of the year. Taking the Supersport Cup race win and sixth overall in Saturday’s race, followed up with a second in the Cup on Sunday at Brands Hatch.

BSB’s finale on the Brands Hatch GP track always brings some drama and spectacle across all classes and 2024 was no different!

Practice was held in cool but dry conditions and Tunstall started well setting a personal best lap time on a Ducati/Supersport bike.

Saturday’s qualifying was a more complicated proposition with rain starting to fall only minutes before the start of Q1.

Sacrificing the first third of the session to fit wet tyres and setting was the right move. The Yorkshireman made the most of the remaining 5 laps as the fastest Cup rider and progressing to Q2.

As the track continued to dry an intermediate rear was fitted but before he could take a lap a red flag halted the session. The team then swapped to full dry tyres for the short restart and Tunstall was classified 3rd in the Cup class at the flag.

The practice and experience set the team in good stead for Saturday afternoon’s Race1.

Started on a mainly dry track but with spots of rain increasing, the race was stopped after five laps as riders started to fall in the tricky conditions.

Despite only very light rain Tunstall and his SRG team were quick to make the call, changing to full wets.

On the restart the decision was quickly vindicated as he stormed from 25th to 6th overall on the opening lap and far ahead of his Cup rivals!

Already tricky conditions became difficult as the rain increased. A crash for Dean Harrison on the penultimate lap brought out the red flag. With a relieved and very pleased Tunstall taking an impressive Cup win and 6th overall.

The performance also gave Tunstall 7th place and top cup runner on the grid for Sunday’s dry feature race.

Without the same pace in the dry, the start of the race was turbulent with crashes and a mixed grid reshuffling.

Struggling to get his rhythm Tunstall dropped back to 5th in cup. He regrouped and chipped his way back to take 2nd in Cup at the end of the 16 laps.

Tunstall reviewed a very positive weekend:

“It’s been a tough weekend and season for us but to finish in a strong way and with a Cup win has been great.

The cold and changeable conditions threw plenty at us. There were many times when I came close to being thrown off in the low grip conditions. But as a team we did our prep, acted quickly and reaped the rewards with our best results of the year.

The class took a step this year with some good young riders coming in and we had a difficult start to the year. Then the injury and missing so many races was very disappointing.

All part of racing and since returning I’ve had a fresh approach and really enjoyed it, with PB’s, podiums and some good progress.

It’s been a disjointed but positive season and I really hope we can return next year, keep the enjoyment but with hopefully dealt easier cards and a smoother season!

I owe a massive thank you to the guys at Specialist Risk Group for supporting us once again. Plus everyone in our little team who’ve been on the roller-coaster with me this year.”
