Tunstall Returns at Oulton
After an 8-week layoff SRG (Specialist Risk Group) backed racer Tom Tunstall made a solid return to the British Supersport Cup championship at Oulton Park.
Backing up Saturday’s 4th place with a second place in Sunday’s feature race and a new Oulton Park PB in the process.
Donington Park in mid May was the last race weekend Tom Tunstall and his SRG Team completed.
Since then injury, infection and the subsequent rehab and recovery have left what feels like a sizeable hole in the Yorkshireman’s 2024 campaign.
Missing the double-header races at Snetterton, Brands Hatch and Thruxton wrote off the chance of retaining his Cup title. So it was with a renewed focus to enjoy and get the most from the remainder of the season that the team returned to the British Superbike paddock.
With limited track time heading into round nine at Oulton felt like the start of a new season for Tunstall as he blew off the cobwebs in practice.
Qualifying was a solid performance with Tunstall setting a new Supersport/Ducati personal best at the Cheshire track.
Saturday's sprint race was cut short just as Tunstall was getting into his stride. Upping his pace every lap and equalling his qualifying times when the red flag appeared. He finished 4th of the Supersport cup runners.
Sunday’s feature race was delayed due to the same heavy rain and standing water which had caused the morning warm up session to be abandoned without completing a lap.
Despite no wet track time with this year’s spec bike Tunstall brought home his Ducati V2 in a season's best 2nd place in tricky conditions on a drying track.
A satisfied Tunstall reflected on his performance:
“It’s fair to say it’s been a challenging couple of months.
Although the infection is completely gone from my elbow, there is still discomfort in the tendon.
Combined with the lack of track time, which feels like starting the season from scratch and some electrical issues we’ve been having. We’ve got to be satisfied with the speed and results from this weekend, especially with everything considered.
It’s been great to get going again and it certainly feels like something we can build on and enjoy the last couple of rounds”.
The penultimate round of the series takes place at Donington Park over the weekend of the 27th-29th of September
